Founded as the Kyiv Brotherhood School in 1615, it was granted the status of a college in 1632, and the status of an academy in 1658. The Kyiv-Mohyla Academy was abolished in 1917 and revived on September 19, 1991 on its historical territory as an independently-governed establishment of higher education in Ukraine - the University of "Kiev-Mohyla Academy". In 1994 it was granted the status of a national university. The first students were enrolled in September 1992. On June 30, 1994, the Ukrainian Interdisciplinary Accreditation Commission awarded the University of "Kiev-Mohyla Academy" (UKMA) a license at the fourth (the highest) level of accreditation. The UKMA learning programs and curricula were endorsed at a special conference of UNESCO experts (May 22-23, 1993). On July 7, 1998, the UKMA was accredited by the State Accreditation Commission at the fourth (the highest) level of accreditation.
