"On August 31, 1898, celebrations took place on the occasion of opening the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute where the Chief of the Trade and Manufacture department proclaimed the Supreme Order in this connection. At that time KPI had 4 departments: mechanics (109 students); engineering (101 student); agricultural (81 student); chemical (63 students)."

"The idea of establishment of technical college arose on February 18, 1880. It was then that owners of sugar factories of Russian South-West [mainly Brodskiy's family and other Jewish businessmen] in the honour of the 25-th anniversary of reign of Alexander the Second, Liberator, decided to gather necessary sum for the erection of technical higher school'. For the foundation of the Institute voluntary donations made up 1,000,374 roubles (according to prices of 1898). Essential scientific and organizational assistance during the KPI establishment was rendered by the leading Russian scientists D.I. Mendeleyev ,K.A. Timiryazev, M.Y. Zhukovsky and others. D.I. Mendeleyev becomes in 1902 the first Head of the State Examination Commission of the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. Professor Viktor Lvovitch Kirpichov, a famous specialist in mechanics, strength of materials and graphical statics, was appointed to be the first Director of the KPI. In 1908 - 1910 under the guidance of prof. N. Delonet, several disciples of M.Y. Zhukovsky organized at the KPI an aircraft construction laboratory, where many famous aircraft designers began their carrier: Grigorovich D.P. - the designer of the first flying boat; Sikorsky I.I. - the designer of the large four-engined aircraft 'llya Muromets' and helicopters; Kudashov A.S.-the creator of the first Russian airplane with the petrol engine."
